Our grandparents used cloth diapers because that's all they had and our parents used plastic ones because they were more convenient, but cloth diapering has also become convenient. There are many new innovations in these newer cloth diapers including the fact that they're waterproof. They also have velcro-like strips instead of safety pins which aren't really all that safe when discovered by a curious baby.
These newer designs of cloth diapers also come with little inserts that catch the waste. Some of these inserts can be disposed of and some are washable. Whichever your choice is, it's a lot better than throwing away several entire plastic diapers each day. With the chemicals they use at the garbage dump and the lack of oxygen, it will take years and years before your child's diapers even have a chance at decomposing.
Cloth diapers not only help to save the environment, but they also save A LOT of money. Think about it this way, you'll only have to buy a handful of cloth diapers, but think about how many plastic diapers you'd have to buy otherwise!
