Finding New Ways to Lower Your Energy Bill

With the increasing cost of energy, and tighter pocketbooks, many Americans are looking into ways to make everyday life cheaper. One of these ways is to be aware of how much power you use. Take a look at your energy bill and see how much energy you actually use.

There are many ways to save energy:
  • If you unplug electronics when you're not using them, you'll save a big noticeable chunk on your energy bill.
  • Shut down your computer when you're not using it. Your computer is one of the biggest energy users.
  • Got extra space in your fridge? Fill up jugs with water and put them in your fridge as "placeholders." This may confuse a lot of people, but I actually learned this trick in culinary arts. When that jug of water gets cold, it keeps the other items in your fridge cold thus making your fridge work less.

  • Turn your water heater down. The water in your water heater will always be hot (unless you've used all the hot water,) imagine how much energy is being used to keep it hot!
There are many other ways to save energy, so use this list to get started and become more aware of the energy that you use.

Cloth Diapering & The Environment

Our grandparents used cloth diapers because that's all they had and our parents used plastic ones because they were more convenient, but cloth diapering has also become convenient. There are many new innovations in these newer cloth diapers including the fact that they're waterproof. They also have velcro-like strips instead of safety pins which aren't really all that safe when discovered by a curious baby.

These newer designs of cloth diapers also come with little inserts that catch the waste. Some of these inserts can be disposed of and some are washable. Whichever your choice is, it's a lot better than throwing away several entire plastic diapers each day. With the chemicals they use at the garbage dump and the lack of oxygen, it will take years and years before your child's diapers even have a chance at decomposing.

Cloth diapers not only help to save the environment, but they also save A LOT of money. Think about it this way, you'll only have to buy a handful of cloth diapers, but think about how many plastic diapers you'd have to buy otherwise!

Reducing Paper Waste Starts at the Post Office

Many credit card companies offer their card members the opportunity to pay their bills online, some of them will even send your statement to your email address instead of your home address. I know American Express and Citibank does this, but if anyone else knows of another company does that, please let me know and I will include it here.

A nice thing about Citibank is that when you mark on their site that you would like to receive email notifications in lieu of a paper statement, they plant a tree in your honor.

One of the largest ways to help is to stop junk mail from being mailed to you. You have the right to not receive junk mail. This site will put you on the "Do Not Mail" list. This not only helps the environment, but it also saves you time in sorting your mail.

You can get on the Do Not Mail list here.
